Open Access: IFPRI Fund and other Funder Policies

Funding Support from CPA - IFPRI Staff Only

IFPRI only finances Open Access fees when there is at least one IFPRI-related author and there is not a current funder that automatically funds Open Access fees.

IFPRI staff can learn more about IFPRI Funding support here.

BMGF support to OA

This policy is valid through December 31, 2024

Starting January 1st, the foundation renewed its Open Access Policy in alignment with cOAlition S and discontinued paying publishing fees to journals for articles submitted in 2021 that did not comply with the transformative agreement. Only publication fees for Gold OA journals or journals committed to OA transformation will be paid. The advantage of choosing gold open access is the articles are freely available on publishers’ websites with a proper license (Creative Commons licenses) rather than standard copyright. All Funded Research including articles accepted for publication shall also be available immediately at publication, without any embargo period. See all policy elements here and see the Grantee Guide for more information on how to navigate the publishing process.

The foundation is tax exempt, but as a private foundation, they are not exempt from sales tax.

Starting in 2025, Gates Foundation will no longer support Open Access fees and is instead encouraging the use of preprint publishing, including on their owned server, Verixiv. More information can be found on the F1000 blog and the Gates Foundation blog.
